Preview: Union Pacific Mainline Power

Dekosoft Trains announces its next major release: Union Pacific Mainline Power. The set of rolling stock for Open Rails Train Simulator will include modern 6-axle locomotives and freight cars. Here’s a sneak peek at the General Electric AC4400CW with 3d cab views and sounds, estimated for summer 2015 release.

GE first launched the AC4400CW in 1993 as a successor to the Dash 9-44CW series to tackle heavy freight service. The locomotive features 4,400 horsepower and uses alternating current traction motors, which offer better pulling power at low speeds than its predecessor. The locomotive achieved great success — a total of 2,598 units were produced, the Union Pacific Railroad claiming the highest ownership (many absorbed through mergers of the Chicago and Northwestern and Southern Pacific).

GP30 Pro Edition: BNSF + Santa Fe sets

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway dispatched GP30s to handle its fast freight trains through the Southwest. The phase II models of EMD’s second generation switcher rolled out of the factory in 1963, but many saw service through the company’s merger with Burlington Northern. Thanks to upgrades from railroad’s Cleburne, Texas shops, they boast 2,500 horsepower — a 250 horsepower increase over the standard GP30 — Santa Fe designated them as GP30u’s. Our GP30 Pro Edition Santa Fe set depicts units 2713 and 2744 in the famous blue and yellow warbonnet colors. Also included is unit 3244, a phase I model, in original early 60s livery.

Our companion BNSF set comes a trio of GP30u diesel locomotives, painted in post-merger colors. These weathered, long surviving veterans are employed for local service.

GP30 Pro Edition: Union Pacific

The Union Pacific Railroad has long taken an innovative approach in its use of diesel locomotive technology. In 1962, it was one of the first customers of General Motor’s GP30, a second generation general-purpose diesel switcher from its Electro-Motive Division, which featured many improvements over the first generation GP’s of the 1950s. This four-axle locomotive was based on a turbocharged 567 diesel power plant producing 2,250 horsepower and yielded up to 63,000 pounds of tractive effort. GM’s Automotive Styling Center, celebrated for its design of the 1959 Cadillac, created the GP30’s distinctive streamlined body. Union Pacific purchased the most GP30s of any railroad — a total of 111 cab units and 40 GP30B ‘booster’ units without cabs — and used them mostly for mainline freight service. A few GP30Bs were equipped with steam generators for passenger service.

Our Pro Edition set for Open Rails includes both GP30 phase II and GP30B models, painted in liveries ranging from the1960s through the last remaining units of the 1980s. We’re excited to include our first 3-D cab views to bring a new dynamic experience to the ORTS platform.
