 The EMD GP35 diesel-electric road switcher first entered revenue service in 1963. A successor to the GP30 (the first hood unit from General Motors) the locomotive was like its predecessor powered with a 567 powerplant producing 2500 horsepower, but packed with a host of electrical improvements in a restyled car body. The GP35 proved successful with deployment throughout the U.S., replacing first generation GP7s and GP9s on tasks ranging from yard and local switching to hauling manifest freight.
